About Dunlop Tyres

The brand of tyres Dunlop, is owed by different companies around the world. Dunlop Rubber was originally founded by Harvey de Cros in 1889, Harvey de Cros involved John Boyd Dunlop, a pneumatic tyre pioneer. John Boyd Dunlop originally discovered the pneumatic tyre principle in 1888 and in 1889 re-invented and developed the first pneumatic tyre.These were bicycle tyres. It is now owned by Goodyear Tyre and Rubber Company located in Europe, Australia, New Zealand and North America. Dunlop rubber experienced difficulties in the 1970’s which led to Dunlop taking on too much debt. In 1985, the company was then acquired by BTR, an industrial conglomerate. Ownership of the Dunlop trade names has been fragmented since then. The company was later named Pneumatic Tyre. In 1895, John Boyd Dunlop sold most of his interest in the company. In 1896, Harvey Du Cros then sold the company to Ernest Terah Hooley for 3 million euros. Harvey Du Cros then formed a new company in 1896 called Dunlop Rubber. In 1912 Dunlop Pneumatic Tyre went out of business and passed it on to Dunlop Rubber. In 1971 Dunlop and Pirelli merged but was not successful. The merger dissolved in 1981. In 1983 the business was sold to Sumitomo Rubber Industries. They sold road vehicle tyres from 1985 to 1999 and then merged with Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company. Dunlop tyres are now sold through various companies worldwide.
